How to use this page
2,136 kanji, from elementary to high school
These lists are based on grades 10 through 2 of the Japanese Kanji Proficiency Test (日本漢字能力検定, nihon kanji nōryoku kentei), commonly abbreviated as 漢検 (kanken). They cover the 2,136 standard-use characters learned by the end of secondary education.
Hover over a kanji for a quick preview, or click/tap it to keep its reading card open. With a keyboard, use Tab then Enter or Space; Escape closes the card.
Characters in each group keep KANJI-Link’s historical ordering: by ON reading first, or by KUN reading when no ON reading exists.
ON = katakana · KUN = hiragana · ▲ = special or less common reading
